The Science Of Summer Design
If you want to give your home a summery feel, here are a few basic tips from me:
I think it’s important to maximize natural daylight. Hang sheer curtains or place mirrors across from windows. More light brings brightness into your home and boosts serotonin production, which improves your mood. We definitely want that!
I also recommend to switch fabrics. Go from heavy stuff like velvet or wool to breathable natural fibers like linen and cotton. They look lighter, feel more summery and don’t trap heat.
The next step is to bring nature inside. Summer means warm temperatures, sunshine, flowers and life! Incorporate nature through plants or natural textures like rattan or jute. It looks vibrant and promotes better oxygen production and healthier indoor air.
In the summer time, I keep furniture minimal. I advise to go for a reduced minimalist layout that lets summer air flow freely through the room instead of blocking it.

Summer Decor Ideas
Okay, let’s move on to my 18 favorite summer decor ideas.
From fresh flowers and embroidery to summer prints, there are lots of different ideas to inspire you.
I hope you find something you like! 🙂
1. Coral Ranunculus
Save Coral ranunculus are the perfect flowers for a summery look.
I think they bring an incredibly vibrant, warm color to a room and simply radiate summer energy.
You can place the ranunculus in a simple glass vase or in a patterned vase (I personally love the combination of blue patterns on a white background).
2. Embroidered Flowers
Save I love it when you find handmade art in a room.
Embroidered pictures with floral motifs are especially lovely, particularly in summer.
It’s so wonderful that embroidered pictures are so durable. I also simply love the nostalgic and romantic charm they exude.
You can either embroider them yourself or buy embroidered pictures to frame. Embroidered pillowcases create the same look.
3. Flowers In Milk Can
Save Do you love the cottagecore vibe? Then this idea is for you!
Instead of using a regular vase, try a milk can for a change!
I think it looks wonderfully simple and is a nice alternative to the classic vase.
If you prefer a nostalgic or vintage look, you can also use old enamel or zinc milk cans. Long-stemmed summer flowers like sunflowers, gladioli or delphiniums look great in them.
Small cans filled with flowers look great on the dining table, while I would place larger cans as a statement piece in the hallway by the front door or in an unused corner of the room.
4. Lemons – Summer Decor Ideas
Save Don’t you think lemons instantly evoke images of an Italian summer on the Amalfi Coast? A dream!
What I love about them is that they add a vibrant splash of color and fill the room with a fresh fragrance.
So, for example, you could place a pretty bowl of lemons on the kitchen counter or dining table (perhaps next to a vase of flowers) or hang up hand-painted plates with lemon motifs.
I especially like it when the lemon motif is repeated, for example, on tea towels or cloth napkins.
5. Maritime Wreath
Save Want to create a relaxed, coastal atmosphere in your home as soon as someone steps through your front door?
Then how about a nautical wreath on your front door?
For example, you could make a sturdy wreath from thick rope and decorate it with carefully chosen shells, starfish or small pieces of driftwood.
I think the wreath looks especially good when hung from a wide, dark blue velvet or grosgrain ribbon. This reflects the nautical theme and picks up on the blue color found in the sea.

6. Natural Details
Save Natural details, such as those made of wood, bring a touch of nature into your home. And since we spend so much time outdoors and in nature during the summer, this fits perfectly with summer decor.
I think materials like woven seagrass baskets, driftwood elements or coasters made of rough slate are especially well-suited to summer decor.
Even when you go for a walk in the woods or on the beach, you can collect natural treasures and display them at home in a shallow, dark wooden dish.
7. Pink & Gold – Summer Decor Ideas
Save I think the combination of pink and gold looks feminine, glamorous and warm. It’s perfect for summer.
You can either place pink flowers in a gold vase or combine soft pink textiles with gold picture frames or candlesticks.
You can also incorporate the pink and gold trend on your dining table by using glasses with thin gold rims.
8. Poppy’s & Yellow Mustard
Save I personally find the flower combination of poppies and yellow mustard absolutely beautiful.
Both colors are vibrant and remind me of blooming summer meadows, simply gorgeous!
A simple vase is perfect for this flower combination, so as not to overwhelm the look.
I would keep the rest of the surroundings neutral in white or light beige, so that the strong color accents can stand out on their own and become a real eye-catcher.

9. Serene Aesthetics
Save I’m a big fan of peace and slowing down, not just in my daily life, but also in my decor, which has a real impact on us.
Visual clarity and plenty of negative space help to focus on tranquility.
I would clear most open surfaces and store everyday items in closed cabinets.
For decoration, I would choose light-colored frames with nature prints and simple glass vases in white or clear.
10. Soft Look – Summer Decor Ideas
Save If you don’t want to go for bright colors in the summer, you can also opt for a soft look.
This will make your home feel harmonious and inviting.
I think this look is perfect for creating a gentle, airy coastal vibe.
To recreate this look, simply place fluffy pampas grass in a white and blue patterned vase. Place the vase on the mantelpiece or on a shelf on the wall.
Hang a painting in blue, gray and white tones behind the vase. I would hang it either without a frame or with a very delicate white frame.
11. Summer Coffee Table Books
Save Coffee table books are a decorative element that always works.
In summer, I would opt for summery coffee table books, for example, about beaches, coastlines, summer travel destinations, architecture or plants.
I would stack two or three of these books on top of each other on the coffee table.
These books also provide an excellent base for further styling.
For example, you could place a small decorative object, such as a particularly beautiful seashell, a scented candle or a small vase, on the top book.
12. Maritime Details
Save Summer is all about sun, sand and sea, don’t you think?
That’s why you can easily incorporate nautical details into your summer decor.
I find subtle touches particularly fitting, like a sturdy jute sailor’s knot as a doorstop, a small wooden sailboat model or a small glass jar filled with seashells.
To complement this, you could, for example, add cushion covers with classic block stripes in bright white and deep navy to your sofa.
13. Summer Flower Wreath
Save Here’s another summer wreath idea!
I absolutely love summer flower wreaths. They’re a great way to bring fresh colors and summery scents into your home, or to welcome your guests with a wreath at the front door, creating a summery atmosphere right from the start.
Fresh wildflowers, chamomile, lavender or any other summer flowers are perfect for a wreath like this.
Another decorating idea: You can also lay the wreath flat on the dining table as a centerpiece and place a thick, white pillar candle in a glass in the middle.

14. Summer Print – Summer Decor Ideas
Save If you’re looking for a quick and inexpensive way to get your room in a summery mood, summer prints might be just what you’re looking for!
Simply swap out dark art prints for light summer prints. These could be abstract beach scenes, palm leaves or citrus fruits.
I would always recommend using frames made of very light wood, like birch or ash, for summer prints. I think this really emphasizes the summery, carefree feel of the image.
15. Surf Accessoires
Save Incorporating surf accessories into your decor creates a laid-back, sporty California vibe, exuding youthfulness and a sense of adventure, in my opinion.
I think it’s especially cool to integrate a surfboard into your living room. For example, you could lean a decorative, well-preserved vintage wooden surfboard against the wall next to the sofa as a striking statement piece.
The same idea works in an empty corner of the hallway.
What I think is really cool is creating a gallery wall with framed black and white photographs of famous surf spots or breaking waves to complement it.
16. White & Blue
Save I think white and blue is one of the freshest color combinations. It’s also a color combination that works well for visual cooling and has a visually “cooling” effect.
I recommend using plenty of white linen for curtains or tablecloths and adding blue accents strategically with ceramic vases or cushions.
If you want to add even more vibrancy to your decor, you can mix accessories in different shades of blue, from soft ice blue to deep indigo.
17. White Orchid – Summer Decor Ideas
Save White orchids look elegant and exotic and the best part is that you can enjoy them for a long time because they are incredibly long-lasting.
I think orchids add a touch of sophistication to light summer decor.
I can also imagine an orchid looking fantastic on a stylish mirrored tray. That would reflect the light beautifully.
18. Summer Prints In Frames On The Floor
Save Since we were just talking about summer prints earlier: Summer prints don’t necessarily have to be hung on the wall.
I think large pictures always look great when they’re standing on the floor and leaning against the wall.
It looks effortlessly casual and is also ideal for rental apartments because no drilling is required.
All you have to do is lean two or three large-format framed summer prints slightly overlapping against the wall, for example, next to a reading chair or a chest of drawers.
I would deliberately combine frames in slightly different sizes and materials to give the arrangement more visual depth and a relaxed feel.
If you like, you can also place a large vase of flowers next to the pictures on the floor.
The Concept Of “Visual Cooling”
Have you ever heard of visual cooling? If not, I’d be happy to explain what it is and how you can achieve it.
With a few changes to your room, such as color, materials or decor, you can trick your brain into thinking the ambient temperature is lower than it actually is.
To achieve this, you should reduce the amount of decorations. This will allow your room to breathe. Deliberately leaving surfaces clear on sideboards or coffee tables reduces visual heaviness and instantly makes the room feel airier and less oppressive.
I also recommend choosing cool colors. “Icy” shades like pure white, mint green or light blue. These colors look cool and our brains then actually perceive it as cooler.
You can also create visual coolness with the materials you choose. I would replace bulky accessories with pieces made of glass or smooth acrylic. They reflect light, appear weightless due to their transparent appearance and don’t obstruct sight lines.
I would completely avoid heavy, dark decorative elements, such as thick wool rugs or dark cushions. Instead, I would opt for light, smooth textures. These appear more refreshing and not “overheated”.
Troubleshooting: Summer Design Pitfalls
If you’re currently buying summer decorations or decorating your home, there are a few things you can keep in mind to ensure your decorations turn out as beautiful as you envisioned.
Ideally, avoid using too many bold motifs, such as anchors, seashells or bright flamingos. I find that these can quickly make a room look like a souvenir shop. Instead, I recommend focusing on a subtle summer atmosphere. You can achieve this by using natural materials and soft colors.
Before decorating for summer, you should put away your winter or autumn decorations. This will prevent visual clutter and confusion. I therefore find it important to always declutter and create space before decorating.
Another tip from me: Always pay attention to UV protection. The power of direct summer sunlight is often underestimated. Light pleated blinds will help prevent your furniture, textiles and artwork from fading.
And a word of caution: Before you banish all carpets from your home to make the rooms feel cooler, don’t completely forgo carpets. Instead, replace them with flat-woven jute or cotton versions. Otherwise, you’ll quickly end up with echoing, unpleasant room acoustics.
Maintenance During Heatwaves
Heat waves can happen in summer, so here are a few tips to protect your decorations during hot periods:
I deeply recommend to watch your plants closely! Houseplants lose way more water at high temperatures. I think it’s important to check the soil more frequently and move sensitive plants out of direct intense midday sun so their leaves don’t burn.
Another tip from me is to keep light fabrics clean. In summer we use light-colored textiles like linen covers. Dust and pollen accumulate fast and typical summer grime like sunscreen and sweat leaves marks. I recommend to wash textiles regularly but gently to keep them looking fresh.
Something that I forget to do regularly but that is very important: Dust daily. Quick wipe with a slightly damp cloth every day prevents surfaces from looking neglected.
As mentioned above, active UV protection is extremely important. I advise you to keep curtains and blinds on the south side consistently closed during the day. This will protect your room from overheating and prevent irreversible sun damage to furniture and decorations.
The Longest Day
Finally, I want to emphasize again that summer decor doesn’t have to be elaborate or expensive.
As described above, simply using airy fabrics or applying “visual cooling” is enough.
A few fresh, vibrant details like colorful flowers or plants will breathe life into your home.
Personally, I like my home to be stress-free during the summer months. That’s why I like to embrace the motto “less is more.”
Encourage a lighter approach: Emphasize that your home should remain stress-free, especially in summer. Less really is more here.
