Outdoor lighting serves several purposes.

First, it’s practical. It keeps you safe, helps you see where you’re going in the dark, so you’re not tripping over flower pots or accidentally falling in the pool at night.

But it also sets the mood. Good outdoor lighting creates atmosphere and adds depth. Depending on what lights you pick and where you put them, you can highlight your home’s architecture too.

A bonus: Lit outdoor areas actually increase your property value. When outdoor spaces are professionally lit, they look quality and inviting instead of just dark and unused.

Understanding The Three Layers Of Outdoor Lighting

Similar to indoor lighting, there are different types of outdoor lighting.

Ambient lighting
Typical examples of ambient lighting are wall lights, bollards, ceiling lights and pendant lights. They provide surface brightness, which makes it easier for you to find your way around outside in the dark.

Task lighting
Task lighting can be, for example, light above the dining table, in the barbecue area or at the entrance. It is intended to facilitate certain tasks or activities and make eating possible.

Accent lighting
Accent lighting is perfect for highlighting specific objects or plants. For example, you can attach spotlights to trees or plants or highlight steps using LED strips or lanterns. Accent lighting aims to create depth, drama and atmosphere.

My tip: A good outdoor lighting design combines all three layers.

Planning Your Outdoor Lighting (Before You Buy Anything)

Before you rush to the nearest hardware store and randomly buy all kinds of lamps for your outdoor area, it makes sense to plan your outdoor lighting first.

Step 1: Define zones
Divide your outdoor area into zones, such as the entrance area, terrace, dining area, seating areas, paths, garden and facade.

Step 2: Plan power connections/solar/batteries
Check carefully where there are connections and which areas require wireless solutions.

Step 3: Angle & position
Here, I recommend using indirect and warm white light rather than bright and glaring light.

Step 4: Check IP protection
IP stands for Ingress Protection and is an international protection classification for electrical devices, especially for lights. The IP number indicates how well a lamp is protected against dust, foreign objects and water. Here are a few IP numbers that are important for you:

• IP44: Splash protection (good for covered areas)
• IP65: Rainproof (important for open areas)
• IP67: Impact/groundproof (for paths, flower beds)

Step 5: Color temperature
Color temperature is measured in Kelvin. It is classified into the following ranges:
2700-3000 K = Warm white and cozy
3500-4000 K = Neutral white for safety and entrance areas

Step 6: CRI
CRI stands for Color Rendering Index. It measures how natural colors appear under a light source, i.e., how “real” your eye perceives colors. The CRI value is on a scale from 0 to 100: The higher the value, the better and more natural the effect.

Choosing The Right Fixtures

The next step is to choose the right fixtures.

I’m happy to share my recommendations with you:

Front door & entrance
For the entrance area, I find wall lamps, downlights or hanging lanterns to be the most attractive and practical. If you want, you can equip them with sensor lights or smart controls. Then they turn on automatically when someone walks past them, which is energy-efficient and ensures that the lights are always on at the right moment.
A practical tip: two wall lights, one on the right and one on the left of the entrance, create a symmetrical and high-quality look.

Paths & driveway
Want to feel right at home and experience that special atmosphere as soon as you drive up the driveway or walk down the path in your garden? Then I recommend installing bollard lights or integrated recessed ground lights. I would place the lights every two to three meters for even light distribution. To ensure that the lights are cozy and don’t look like a parking lot, I would also use warm white light in the 2700-3000K range here.

Patio & dining area
To ensure you’re not sitting in the dark when dining with your loved ones, you’ll need the right lamps here too. Pendant lights or hanging lights above the table create the right atmosphere and ensure that you can see what’s on your plate. If your dining area is not covered, you can also use wireless table lamps or solar lights as an alternative.

Stairs, Steps & Path Edges
Step lights look particularly modern. Not only do they look stylish, they also ensure that you don’t fall over. If you want this for your stairs, you can either opt for recessed lights or stick LED strips under the edge of the steps. 1-2 watts is often sufficient here.
My tip: Opt for several small light points rather than one bright light source.

Garden & Plants
If you want to illuminate your plants or trees, you can create a very special atmosphere with spike lights or spotlights with a narrow beam angle of 15-30°. When placed to the side, they create shadows and thus visual depth, which looks really impressive and makes your outdoor area much more interesting. Make sure that your lights have an IP65+ rating and 200-400 lumens per spot.

Walls & Architecture
Wall washers or up-down lights show your house facade in the right light. They emphasize the structure of the house or create lighting highlights. I recommend placing the lights symmetrically, e.g. 1,2-1,5 meters apart.

Balcony & Small Spaces

First, take measurements and check what time of day the sun shines where and where there is shade. This is especially important if you want to plan seating areas or dining nooks. Also, pay attention to where the wind comes from and whether you have enough privacy screens.

Next, think about what you want to use your patio for. Do you want to eat on it or just relax? Should there be a family/children’s area or a mix of everything?

Now check the surface: Is it made of stone, wood, or concrete? And do you want to leave it as it is or replace it with a different material? Also check whether there is drainage so that you don’t end up standing ankle-deep in water the next time it rains.

It is also usually helpful to distinguish between must-haves and nice-to-haves. You should not skimp on the flooring and good patio furniture. If you have always dreamed of a fire pit, make that dream come true. Plants, decorative items and lighting are usually areas where you don’t have to choose the most expensive version.

Depending on the size of your patio, you can divide it into different zones, for example:

Modern minimalist patios are characterized by dark colors (gray, black), clean lines and simple, rough materials such as concrete.

If you choose the “boho chic” style, you should go for wood, rattan, macramé and fairy lights. Fabrics and rugs with boho patterns complete the look.

Get the right size:
Don’t just grab the biggest dining set you can find. Instead, measure your space. Furniture that’s too big makes the whole patio feel cramped.

Materials that last:
Go for furniture that can handle weather, like aluminum, poly rattan, teak, acacia. Regular indoor furniture falls apart outside way faster than you’d think.

Cushions and fabrics:
Make sure they come off easily so you can wash them or bring them in when it rains. UV-resistant fabric keeps them from fading into sad, washed-out versions of themselves.

Table height:
If it’s a dining table, aim for around 75cm. You have a coffee table or lounge setup? It should be around 40cm high. Wrong height and everything feels awkward.

Actually comfortable:
Get chairs with backs. Those backless benches look cool but you’re not going to want to sit there for more than ten minutes. And I recommend to add cushions because it’s uncomfortable to sit on hard wood or metal for hours.

You have a small space? Folding furniture or furniture that serves double duty, like benches with storage inside, saves you a ton of room.

Lighting For Every Situation

Not every light is suitable for every purpose and not every light creates the same atmosphere. To remain as flexible as possible, you should opt for layered lighting rather than a single light source:

Ambient lighting: Use fairy lights, wall lamps and solar lanterns.

Task lighting for the dining area: Use pendant lights, portable table lamps and supplement with candles or lanterns if necessary.

If your patio is small, you’re not out of luck. Herbs in pots, hanging baskets, pots mounted on the wall: You can have plenty of plants without losing floor space.

And if you want it to feel warm instead of cold and modern, stick with natural materials for the pots. Terracotta, rattan, wood and jute are what I’d pick.

Which Textiles Should You Choose?

You want more texture on your patio? That’s Easy. Just add outdoor rugs, blankets and cushions with different textures.

Like I mentioned before, go for weatherproof and UV-resistant fabrics. Polyester, acrylic and PET hold up pretty well outside.

I recommend to pick 2-3 textures per area. Something like linen plus rattan plus metal works.

If you’ve already got a color palette for your patio, stick with it. Choose cushion colors that match so everything feels coordinated instead of random.

On the other hand, I would save money on textiles, plants and decorations. These are things that you might want to replace from time to time, so in my opinion, it’s not worth spending a lot of money on them.

If you’re on a tight budget, you can also think about upcycling ideas. Old wooden crates, pallets and wine boxes can be used to build great DIY furniture and plant boxes. With a little craftsmanship and a good YouTube tutorial, you’re sure to achieve an extraordinary result.

My tip is to go for a combination of IKEA, H&M Home, Zara Home, Wayfair and Etsy. This is a high-low mix in terms of price and you can’t go wrong with it.

Okay, before you start ordering decor elements and furniture online, actually go and stand on your balcony for a minute.

How much space do you really have? When does the sun hit it, are you getting blasted at 2pm or is it shady all day? Does the wind whip through there like crazy? And be honest, can your neighbors see you or do you have some actual privacy?

Now think about what you want this space to be. A place to sit with coffee and a book? Somewhere to grow tomatoes and herbs? You want a little table so you can eat out there? Or are you one of those people who’s going to try working from their balcony on nice days?

Whatever it is, make two lists. One for the things you can’t do without, like a chair to sit on or something to block the neighbor’s view. The other for things that would be cool but aren’t critical, like lights, cushions etc.

That way when you’re on a budget or running out of room, you know what actually matters.

Step 2: All-Year Essentials

If you want your balcony setup to actually last, you need things that can handle being outside.

Storage:
You got a small balcony? Get a bench that opens up or one of those deck boxes. It’s great to stash cushions and blankets when you’re not using them. A true game changer for not having stuff pile up inside.

• Mirrors and light-colored textiles: Light-colored fabrics have a visually enlarging and friendly effect. You can also hang a mirror on the wall of the house (but make sure you are allowed to hammer nails into the wall).
• Color selection: I recommend choosing two to three main colors and consistently using one “fixed” material (a type of wood or metal). This creates a uniform and high-quality look.
