First Things First: Check Out Your Patio
Before you head to the nearest hardware store, it’s a good idea to take a close look at your patio and plan how you want it to look in the future.
First, take measurements and check what time of day the sun shines where and where there is shade. This is especially important if you want to plan seating areas or dining nooks. Also, pay attention to where the wind comes from and whether you have enough privacy screens.
Next, think about what you want to use your patio for. Do you want to eat on it or just relax? Should there be a family/children’s area or a mix of everything?
Now check the surface: Is it made of stone, wood, or concrete? And do you want to leave it as it is or replace it with a different material? Also check whether there is drainage so that you don’t end up standing ankle-deep in water the next time it rains.
It is also usually helpful to distinguish between must-haves and nice-to-haves. You should not skimp on the flooring and good patio furniture. If you have always dreamed of a fire pit, make that dream come true. Plants, decorative items and lighting are usually areas where you don’t have to choose the most expensive version.
You don’t have a terrace, but a balcony instead? No problem! In this guide, I have put together a few ideas on how you can create an inviting balcony.
Build Your Patio Foundation With The Right Layout
Depending on the size of your patio, you can divide it into different zones, for example:
- Lounge
- Dining
- Barbecue
- Green Corner
- Fire Pit
- Kids Corner
To visually separate the different zones, you can use outdoor rugs, plant pots and fairy lights.
Multifunctional furniture is ideal for small patios, such as a folding bench with storage space inside.
Different floor coverings create different looks. Natural stone looks elegant, wood looks warm, concrete slabs look modern and outdoor rugs look cozy and boho-style.
Choose Your Patio Style
The great thing is that you can design your patio in a variety of styles. You have complete freedom and can choose according to your taste.
Modern minimalist patios are characterized by dark colors (gray, black), clean lines and simple, rough materials such as concrete.
If you choose the “boho chic” style, you should go for wood, rattan, macramé and fairy lights. Fabrics and rugs with boho patterns complete the look.
To bring the coastal look into your home, choose white and blue colors, light woods and linen fabrics. You can also decorate with lanterns, shells and wind lights.
A farmhouse-style patio is characterized by natural tones, wooden furniture, metal elements, jute and fresh flowers.
You can also give your patio a Mediterranean feel. Terracotta, olive, blue and mosaic tiles will transport you and your guests straight to Portugal, Italy or Greece.
A little tip from me: Create a small mood board with a color palette (3 colors + 1 metal). This will help you define your style.
What To Consider When Buying Furniture
Before you rush out and buy furniture that may not be suitable, there are a few things you should keep in mind.
Match the size of the furniture to the respective area of your patio and don’t buy sets that are too large.
I recommend buying furniture made of weatherproof materials such as aluminum, poly rattan, teak and acacia.
Cushions and textiles should be removable, washable and UV-resistant so that they look good for as long as possible.
If you are buying a dining table, I recommend a height of ~75 cm. A lounge table should be ~40 cm high.
To ensure you can sit comfortably on your furniture, make sure that the seating has backrests. Seat cushions and pillows provide sufficient padding.
As mentioned above, folding furniture or modular systems are advisable for small spaces, as they serve multiple purposes: They function as furniture and storage space.
Lighting For Every Situation
Not every light is suitable for every purpose and not every light creates the same atmosphere. To remain as flexible as possible, you should opt for layered lighting rather than a single light source:
Ambient lighting: Use fairy lights, wall lamps and solar lanterns.
Task lighting for the dining area: Use pendant lights, portable table lamps and supplement with candles or lanterns if necessary.
Accent lights for plants, steps, or railings: Use floor spotlights, mini wall lights, or recessed lights in stair steps.
I also recommend always choosing warm white light (2700-3000K) because it simply looks cozier and less clinically sterile.
Let’s Talk About Details: Greenery & Textures
To keep your patio from looking dull, you definitely need some plants!
Arranging plants in groups and at different heights and textures can create a certain visual dynamic.
Large potted plants (olive trees, bamboo, grasses) are great for dividing up space.
Is your patio small? Don’t worry! Herbs or hanging baskets are also great for small spaces and take up little or no floor space.
If you want to create visual warmth, it’s best to use natural materials such as terracotta, rattan, jute or wood.
Which Textiles Should You Choose?
Would you like more texture and grip on your patio? No problem! Outdoor rugs, blankets and cushions with different textures can help.
As mentioned above, it is worth choosing fabrics that are weatherproof and UV-resistant. Polyester, acrylic and PET materials are quite robust in this regard.
It’s best to choose 2-3 textures per zone, e.g., linen + rattan + metal.
Depending on the style of your patio, you may already have decided on a color palette. Choose cushion colors that match your chosen color palette so that everything looks harmonious and coordinated.
Patio Decor Ideas
To give you a concrete idea of what your patio could look like, I’ve put together 20 patio decor ideas for you. Have fun with them!
1. Uniform Colors

If you have a favorite color or prefer a uniform look, you can buy all your patio furniture in the same color.
If you want everything to match perfectly, you can also buy cushions, decorations and lamps in the same color.
Otherwise, decorations and cushions give you plenty of flexibility and allow you to add color and variety if things start to get a little boring.
2. Small Sofa & Two Armchairs

If you don’t have quite as much space but don’t want to forego a cozy seating area, you can also opt for a small sofa, e.g., a two-seater, armchairs or a combination of both.
You have complete freedom when it comes to arranging the furniture, which is another advantage.
3. L-Sectional & Armchair

If you have more space, you can place an outdoor version of an L-shaped sectional sofa on your patio, similar to the one in your living room.
Here, too, you can add armchairs or chairs for additional seating options.
4. Several Armchairs Around A Round Low Table

Are sofas too inflexible, stiff and bulky? How about several armchairs instead?
You can arrange them around a low table or a fire pit, for example.
This type of seating area is simply inviting and encourages conversation and enjoyable evenings with loved ones.
5. Sofa Integrated Into Stone With Wooden Bench As Table

Sometimes you have the opportunity to integrate your patio furniture into the patio design.
A sofa integrated into the patio stone looks modern and unique.
If you like this option, keep in mind that furniture integrated into the stone cannot be replaced quickly. The decision should therefore be well considered.
6. Corner Seating Area With Dining Table

Do you have a corner on your patio at home and don’t know how to make good use of the unused space?
One option would be to turn it into a seating area with a corner bench. Here you can eat, entertain friends, drink coffee, work or simply chat.
7. Two Sofas Facing Each Other

Two simple sofas facing each other on the terrace are a great conversation starter.
You can leave the space between the two sofas empty, place a small flat table there or set up a fire pit, depending on what you prefer.
8. Wicker Chairs With A Small Round Table

Wicker chairs always exude a special charm. Somehow, they always remind me of vacations.
Due to the basket material, they appear light and airy and do not visually overwhelm.
You can either leave the chairs as plain as they are or you can decorate them with cushions, furs or blankets. Not only does it look cozy, but it also creates a cozy feeling.
9. Sofa Lounge With Fairy Lights – Patio Decor Ideas

Those blessed with a large patio can set up a spacious seating area, for example, consisting of sofas.
String lights always provide a particularly cozy touch. Hanging above the seating area, they bathe everything in a warm, soft light in the evening hours.
I personally love fairy lights and would decorate every terrace with them.
10. Upholstered Chairs Around Round Table

If you like the vintage look and don’t want ordinary patio furniture, you can also opt for upholstered chairs.
They visually transport you to another decade and, as mentioned, exude a typical vintage charm.
Just make sure that the seating furniture doesn’t stay outside in all weather conditions, it wouldn’t be good for the upholstery.
11. Rugs For Boho Vibes

Attention, Boho style fans!
Do you want to make your terrace shine in the Boho look as well? It’s not that hard!
Rugs in typical Boho colors and patterns provide the free-spirited, cozy Boho charm.
You can either just lay down one rug or, if there’s enough space on your terrace, even two or more (my tip: you can layer them as well).
12. Extravagant Wicker Chairs

Since we were just talking about wicker chairs: They don’t just come in the classic, unobtrusive version.
Have you always dreamed of a true Boho-Tron? Then these chairs might be just right for you.
As a design statement and statement pieces, you create a real eye-catcher with them.
With additional decorative items (candles, lanterns, rugs and dried flowers), the chairs become the centerpiece of your patio.
13. White Rocking Chairs – Patio Decor Ideas

What a romantic sight: Two white rocking chairs on a porch.
This arrangement doesn’t have to be just for older people, it brings the relaxed, southern flair to your home.
This could become your new favorite place to exchange daily events with your partner after work or to enjoy a little sundowner with a friend on the weekend.
A small side table is not only practical but also provides visual balance.
To give the white rocking chairs a bit more life, you can also decorate them with cushions or blankets.
14. Dining Table With Greenery & Fairy Lights

Fairy lights also look beautiful and romantic in green surroundings.
They look good not only over a sofa or seating area but also over a dining table.
15. Sturdy Wooden Dining Table With Symmetrically Arranged Chairs

If you like stable, massive arrangements, this idea is for you.
The dining table offers enough space for friends and family and the heavy wicker chairs complete the sturdy look.
16. Wicker Sofas With Wooden Elements

You don’t like pure wicker furniture? How about wicker furniture with wooden elements?
The wooden elements give the wicker furniture a modern, timeless and high-quality character.
Additionally, they are great for repeating wooden elements made of the same wood on the terrace. For example, you can place a side table or a candle holder made of the same wood. This ensures that your terrace looks visually cohesive.
17. Play Tent For The Kids

If you have enough space on the patio and want to make your little ones happy, you can set up a play tent for children, for example.
Here, children can play and spend time in their “own world”. They have their own retreat.
You can also beautify the tent with some decor, for example, with a rug, a string of lights or vases with dried flowers. This way, the tent doesn’t look “typical child,” but instead exudes a light boho charm.
18. Loungers – Patio Decor Ideas

This idea is for all sun worshipers.
If you have enough space on your patio for multiple zones or can do without regular seating chairs, lounge chairs could be an alternative for you.
You can find deck chairs made from many different materials, whether it’s wood, plastic or metal. You can create that special touch with the right decor (cushions, pillows).
19. Small Seating Area

Even if you only have a tiny terrace, there might only be room for a small table and two small chairs.
This seating arrangement always reminds me of small French balconies in Paris. And that has something romantic about it, doesn’t it?
Sometimes you don’t need much more, because even if the seating area is small, you can enjoy the fresh air outside and make yourself comfortable in a small space.
Candles, vases and cushions make your little retreat even cozier.
20. Sofa With Armchairs & Low Table

This look is for everyone who likes it rustic.
Sofas and armchairs made of dark wicker with brownish cushions, in the middle a massive wooden coffee table and a rug that visually ties everything together and also adds a rustic touch.
This look should especially appeal to outdoor enthusiasts. With the right materials and colors, you can create exactly the ambiance you envision in your mind’s eye.
Seasonal Styling Tipps
You can adapt your patio to suit the season and give it a different look. With the right decorations and materials, you can emphasize the visual appeal of each season.
Here are my recommendations:
Spring/summer: Light fabrics, bright colors, variety of plants
Fall/winter: Plaids, lanterns, fire pit, windbreak, radiant heater
You can add seasonal accents and give your patio a fresh update every season with cushion colors and patterns, decorations and plants.
What Is Worth Spending Money On & Where You Should Save
At first, you may find it difficult to judge what you should spend a lot of money on and what you should spend less on.
Personally, I always think it makes sense not to skimp on furniture and flooring. These are simply the basics and if you buy sensible, durable pieces, you’ll get the most out of them in the long run.
On the other hand, I would save money on textiles, plants and decorations. These are things that you might want to replace from time to time, so in my opinion, it’s not worth spending a lot of money on them.
If you’re on a tight budget, you can also think about upcycling ideas. Old wooden crates, pallets and wine boxes can be used to build great DIY furniture and plant boxes. With a little craftsmanship and a good YouTube tutorial, you’re sure to achieve an extraordinary result.
My tip is to go for a combination of IKEA, H&M Home, Zara Home, Wayfair and Etsy. This is a high-low mix in terms of price and you can’t go wrong with it.
