Before decorating for summer, you should put away your winter or autumn decorations. This will prevent visual clutter and confusion. I therefore find it important to always declutter and create space before decorating.

Another tip from me: Always pay attention to UV protection. The power of direct summer sunlight is often underestimated. Light pleated blinds will help prevent your furniture, textiles and artwork from fading.

And a word of caution: Before you banish all carpets from your home to make the rooms feel cooler, don’t completely forgo carpets. Instead, replace them with flat-woven jute or cotton versions. Otherwise, you’ll quickly end up with echoing, unpleasant room acoustics.

Heat waves can happen in summer, so here are a few tips to protect your decorations during hot periods:

Another tip from me is to keep light fabrics clean. In summer we use light-colored textiles like linen covers. Dust and pollen accumulate fast and typical summer grime like sunscreen and sweat leaves marks. I recommend to wash textiles regularly but gently to keep them looking fresh.

Something that I forget to do regularly but that is very important: Dust daily. Quick wipe with a slightly damp cloth every day prevents surfaces from looking neglected.

As mentioned above, active UV protection is extremely important. I advise you to keep curtains and blinds on the south side consistently closed during the day. This will protect your room from overheating and prevent irreversible sun damage to furniture and decorations.

As described above, simply using airy fabrics or applying “visual cooling” is enough.
